Recycling

Keep your renewable waste out of the landfill. The Recycling Center on 3rd & Adler is collecting cans, plastics, mixed paper, tires, junk vehicles, refrigerators and freezers.

Through an EPA grant, Fort Yukon leases out a garage in the community to store recyclables and to operate a used clothing/household goods store. Used oil from businesses in the community fuels a used oil burner in the garage, providing heat for customers and staff. If you would like more information about Ft. Yukon’s thrift store, contact Vicki Thomas at the Fort Yukon Tribal Council at 907.662.2581.

Fort Yukon has a fantastic storage and backhaul program for hazardous wastes and recyclables. Batteries are stored in plastic totes and used antifreeze and transmission fuel in drums. Once the recycle containers are full, they are taken to a Connex container that sits next to the barge landing. When the Yutana Barge stops at the community, it picks up the hazardous wastes and recyclables and takes them away for free! All communities in Alaska that are off the road and can connect to Anchorage via Northern Air Cargo are eligible to participate in the Flying Cans backhaul program. The program is sponsored by Alaskans for Litter Prevention and Recycling (ALPAR), Smurfit-Stone Recycling, Northern Air Cargo and numerous other members of the Alaska Air Carriers Association.  ALPAR currently pays 35 cents a pound for aluminum cans, and there is no cargo charge!
